Public Hearing on Removing Bank Tax Exemption Referendum
9:00 am Committee on Finance City Council Chamber, Second Floor City Hall, Chicago, Illinois
Wednesday, July 28, 2010
For consumers who buy or sell a home in Illinois, there is no way around it: they will pay taxes to transfer the title of a home from seller to buyer.
But for banks, the situation is different. Banks and other mortgagees or secured creditors that foreclose on a home don't pay a tax connected to the transfer of the title in question. And at least one Chicago alderman says it's time to change that exemption.
Maldonado recently proposed to the city's Finance Committee a resolution that would give voters a chance to change the exemption and make banks pay for transfer taxes on foreclosures.
The resolution can be downloaded here.
